As far as the cricket Q--yes, put them on top of the water, the fish will find them. I like to gut-load my crickets 1st, by placing a slice of orange for them to eat/drink for a while. You may not have a small continer to do that in though. I use a small Critter Keeper & a TP roll for them to climb on, otherwise they kill each other & let them munch on the orange overnight. If that's too much work, then just toss them in your tank when you get them. Start with a dozen. A few sometimes climb out up filter tubes--then your whole house is cricketting for about a week! Hubby used to love that...
