pink tail trigger

I have heard more good results than bad, so I am optimistic. He's hiding today but is already eating mysis and cut shrimp. You keep a puffer in your reef? What kind and what tankmates have you had success with? Not sure that I have ever heard of that being successful. If so, that would be really neat.

My reef has a Niger and PInk Tail Trigger, Porcupine Puffer (the reason I got into the hobby), Foxface, Sixline Wrasse, 4 Chromis, 1 Azure Damsel and a Skunk Cleaner Shrimp... I recently took most of my corals out and put them in a smaller tank, because I want to add a Blue Face Angel fish, but I still have Purple and Green Monti Caps, Superman Monti, Large Galaxy Coral, Anthelia, Finger Leather, Acropora, Birdsnest, Purple Stylophora, and Tri-Color Acro. Plus Mushrooms and Kenya Trees... So far the puffer has been a model citizen as long as your not a Hermit Crab or Nassarius Snail... He gets a little crazy at feeding time and might break off a branch of SPS, but I just add that to the frag rack... Hiding is normal, and after he/she get's to know you, it will be in your face every time you look in the tank, that's how mine acts... lol Oh, this is in a 180 gallon too, in case that helps...

The best part is when he plows through the school of chromis. It's like a kid on the beach running through a bunch of seagulls... He does it just for fun....

Pinktails don't have the same mouth type as like a crosshatch or sargassum. They have much the same mouth as like a clown or picasso trigger, sure the size is smaller but it's built for the same function. The Xanthichthys are zooplankivore, they jaws aren't designed for scraping anything.

But whatever, all I'm saying is that with a Xanthichthys, all you have to worry about are the smallest kinds of shrimp.

Will be ordering one for my 125 reef... I am a little scared to try it. Mostly worried about my starfish and cleaner shrimp. I have heard good things though. Any experience or thoughts?

Nice fish but most will take care of your cuc.

Generally a few triggers like the pink tail and blue throat may be "reef safe"". However long experience has taught me that you can only stereotype fish species to a degree. I have dealt with a pink tail who was an absolute brute while others have been placid. Ultimately fish are like people, they have their own personalities.

well he has been in there for a week now and not taken out anything but mysis and flake... his tail is not very pink. I hope that improves with time.
