i recently picked up my first RTC, its about 3" ive had him home for a couple of days now

i have had some trouble getting him to eat, i know it might take a while to settle in before he starts eating, i would like to eventually get him onto hikari massivore pellets, eventually

anyways i tried a few things, feeders, sinking pellets, with no sucess then i tried portions of a pinkie mouse i sometimes feed to my oscar, he took both out of my hand straight away and seems to like it

is it ok to keep feeding him this if i keep trying to vary the rest of his diet??

Mammalian protein is not good for the fish. They will not easily be digested at all and can lead to health issues, most particularly digestive upsets. Refrain from feeding it mice. Try earthworms, bloodworms, super worms, crickets and other things you can reach but not meat from mammals.

this is not completely true. Mammalian meats are not bad for the fish but it should not make up a large part of the diet. Things such as Beefheart are also mammalian meat and that is a very popular food for fish. If you keep varying his diet it is ok to sometimes feed pinky mice....

:iagree: and I know there are several people on the site that feed their cats hotdogs, and thats certainly mammalian. And I would venture to guess that if I mouse falls into the river a wild RTC is living in, its going to eat it, along with frogs, lizards, other rodents, hell probably even small dogs :D

Might want to feed your cat with the lights off.

ok thanks i wasnt planning to make it a staple its just that its the only thing hes responded to and i was worried cause he wasnt eating, ill cut it out

im trying some shrimp tonite anyways, thanks again

Are you sure it's not going for the feeders? RTCs are not that picky. But a variety is always the best diet. Try to get it on pellets.
