I've got 2 new tanks coming this weekend (36x24x24) and i've decided that the bottom tank is going to house red bellied pirahnas. How many should i put in? what problems may i come across. Any advise at all on keeping pirahnas?

Thank you.....

That's a 90gallon demension. I would put 3 full grown adult or 5 small to medium in there.

Piranha are very unpredictable, you never when their going to fight or kill each other.

First you need to cycle your tank 3-4 week if you using everything new. cycle are very important for piranha so their don't get sick or stress out.

Keep them well fed..3-4 time a day when small, adult once a day or every other day.
keep the temp 76-82f but suggestion 76f because you got a group of RBP their get active and aggressive with hight temp.

ph should be 6.7 to 7.2 , keep the light dimmed (low light) as much filteration as you can. piranha is a messy eater and love to swim against the current.

You can cut your cyclic time if you have a pre-established tank. Just "seed" the new tank with the other's water, filter cartridges, or gravel.

You could fit 4 in there and they'd still be ok, that'd give you a little wiggle room incase you lose one. It'll be harder finding one the same size as your others in a month or 2.

Make sure you offer plenty of territories. Driftwood, rock caves, and so on. a terracotta flowerpot on it's side would even help!!

Good Luck with your coming additions!!

thanks for all the advice, would i be best putting younger small fish in or young adults?? the shop i use to get all my fish does stock both. How quick do they grow??

Get young. RBP's grow fast and are fun to watch. I'd however go with 6-7 juviniles with that tank and downgrade to the strongest fish as they mature.

aaarrrrggghhhhh........... what do i do?? so confused!! do i or don't i keep Pirahna?? spent the last 2 days reading reviews and other threads.

If they are what you would like to keep-Then by all means get them-
Just do the proper research before purchaseing is all-

It will take alot longer than two days to full understand the requirement and behavior traits of these species......The site that I recommended that you read will teach you everything one needs to know from a scientific point of view-Most hobbiest are also confused, and are misleading on info......

I say go for it. Get 4 juvi's, and grow them out. they are fast growers. you have an alright size tank for them, so why not?!?! I think you will be pleased once you have your shoal
