Piraiba growout

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think I could tell between Suriname and Peru and this looks the latter. It is pale though and some spots, especially on the cranial shield are washed out.

Would Tripletail's Guayana piraiba look the same as Suriname? Are these countries (Guayana and Suriname) located in the same drainage / river basin? https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/guyana-piraiba.709942/

Neither do I know what Brasil piraiba looks like. I assume it must be the same as Peru as this is the same river Amazon.

Honestly, at this size, there's no way of telling the difference between them. All look the same. From my observation, when reached certain size, Guyana piraiba looks the same as Suriname. They have duckbill snout.

Brazil & Peru have torpedo snout. But Brazil have darker colour & spots existing from the end of dorsal to their caudal fin.

Back to OP's post, I do think that's Peru. It only takes a year for them to reached 16-20"

Yes , 16 -20 inches will come very fast . Some advise I would give you is grow him up with a few different kinds of mellow fish .as tankmates . I grew one up to 24 inches or so within a year. My mistake with that fish was growing him up in a tank by himself . He was so skittish . He would only eat pellets and if you put siversides or fish filet in tank for food he would freak out and hit tank walls. Lima shovelnose and tiger shovelnose would be good companions.

Well due the the influx and price drop I just had to have a go at one. As far a regional variation

That sounds like capapretum behavior to me (they are in general 1000x more skittish than piraiba) but details matter and I assume the long barbels and tail extensions must have been touching more than one or even two walls at a time and that made the fish feel trapped and skittish and flighty. My Suriname at 1.5' in an 8x2x2 resembled what you described.

Calm dithers would have only a limited effect in this circumstance I think and would not change the situation qualitatively, only quantitatively, in that there would be less frequent freak outs but they will persist.

LSN is too a skittish fish IME and more than half of them break or injure their snout. TSN should be better.

My $0.02.

Whatever happen to your 24" fila? Have you made a thread or a write-up on it? We could all learn from both our successes and failures, if only we share and discuss in good faith and kind intentions.
