ok, i have had him for about a week and a half, and he is in a 225 gallon, with his redtail, tiger shovelnose, and redtail x tiger shovelnose hybrid. all very friendly and native

Better watch out so that he doesn't become a feeder for that redtail or the hybrid. Piraiba grow a lot slower than those tank mates, like 1" a month vs like 2-3" a month for the RTC/TSN/Hybrid. Also in a tank that size with such small fish I'd definitely put a dense shoal of feeders in there to make it easier for him to catch them. Leave the lights off the majority of the day for sure when they are small and keep plenty of o2 in the water and moderate temps 76-80. What is your pH? Should be around 6.6-6.8 but constant pH is more important than proper pH generally.

Keep at it, Laz and Trent have given good information and have had experience with these guys. I really want to see him!

he ate, ain't he a beauty?

Glad to see you got him eating, what did it start feeding on? Did you try turning off the lights and stocking heavily with feeders?
