:banhim: I have six red-belly piranahs and when i turn on the light the go crazy, and start hiding...I have had them for about 4-5months.. Should I just keep leaving the light off and let them be or should I just turn on the light and hope that they will adapt to the setting....ive been thynking about goin with live plants so that's why I want my tank light to stay on

I'd keep the lights as dim as possible. They don't like bright lights too much, so I'd suggest maybe some low light plants. That would keep the amount of light needed to a minimum. You could also throw in a bunch of drift wood and stuff to create some shady areas that they can hide under. The dimmer the light is, the darker their colors are too. I think they look better under dim light.

You could also go with silk plants. They are a little more realistic looking than plastic ones and then you could keep the lights low.

Yea mine are the same, i dont even bother turning the light on anymore. The tank is right buy a window though so they get a good amount of natural light.

I would agree !!

i only ever used 1 bulb on my p tanks and they always got used to the light its a matter of patience and you need a lot with p's.
also keep the light on for 10hrs or so

i agree about the patience thing. but piranhas are naturally inclined to not like bright lights.
they have no eyelids, so bright lights hurt their eyes. darker colored substrate is prefered, and i recommend using blackwater extract, or peat. it'll tint your water so that the light doesnt affect them as much.
goodluck.

i use regular light on my tank, my fish dont act wierd at all, they hide for a min when i first turn it on but they come out a min later.

wat is this and where can u obtain it from

just spray paint the light on your tank, i spray painted mine gold. My tank looks pretty cool, and the fish aren't scared now. I also have red bellies

I have 5 rbp's in a 125 gallon. I started with them when they were just a few weeks. When really young they were not light sensitive. Now they are light extremely sensitive and skittish. I tried a bunch of things, some of which helped. First, I painted the background flat black. This calmed them down. Second, I gave them less places to hide. Without the hiding spaces they were forced to come out. Third, I tinted the hood glass with automotive window tint to soften the light. This helped somewhat too. Recently, I bought blue LED moonlights from Doctor Foster and Smith. The P's are far more comfortable under this light than the white light.
