Piranha has white bubble over eye!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey ya'll. Thank you for all of the great advice! @ JP-I know, that ugf is a pain in my ass. I am looking atm for a deal on a canister filter to replace all of this stuff... I just did another wc and they all look ALOT perkier. The white patchy/webby/salty stuff has dissipated. No floaters, running with nothing in the 3 hob's, lights off, removed some ornamental crap. About to dose with the Maroxy/then wed with Kanaplex...and so on and so forth.

@Otherone: Yes, it has been a Nasty 5 days. I felt like every time I would come home from work, one would be dead or a couple or all....I was freakin. I have 4 powerheads goin', 3 attached to ugf/one by itself. The Melafix made them angry and dopey acting. This Kanaplex seems less invasive and a lot less smelly. I have never fed this shoal with live anything. When Harry the 8'' was by himself I did feed him with live goldfish and he almost died. I learned my lesson. I feed them a mix of tilapia/shrimp/pellets/veggies/potatoes. Weekly I feed them crickets.

Nitrates: back up to 20ppm( Im not even feeding them?!)
Nitrites: 0
Ammonia: 0
ph: 6.8

you removed everything from HOB? I hope you didn't remove any bio media.
anyway, what's your budget on a canister anyway? have you thought about building a DIY wet/dry? it can be done with fairly low budget and has much greater potential than any canister filter.

Yeah I did... I didn't remove the biowheels...but all of the inserts yes. Is that bad, I thought anything with charcoal would filter out the meds...
Is it possible to get all the fixins on 300 bucks? I wouldn't even know where to begin, but i might try, I just got a new dremel 4000, might come in handy.

I feel like such a fish abuser, I thought I was doing everything right...I was sorely mistaken:( They are all still alive and looking alot less patchy white and all eyes are clearing up, should I feed them though its been since last friday....

Thanks for all of the wonderful advice and knowledge everyone:)

i haven't posted at all because i see you're in good hands but i've been following.

you are not at all a fish abuser, you just hit a rough patch. Could've happen to anyone. This sight is loaded with information on DIY projects, a ton of them step by step, plus jp is pretty handy. you should put some thought into a wet/dry

I don't know what I would do without you guys...thanks for the encouragement ballin! Researching the diy section now for ideas.

Glad to hear things are turning around. Your most certainly not alone in having a vicious outbreak. With a ton of fish in the house I've battled my share.

Update: Swimming nicely, although they are pissed with the wc's every other day:) Only about three now with noticeable cloud eye. Everyone's fins and bodies look clear. When should I start introducing food and putting all the filter media back in? One of my students said the same thing happened to a friend and all his Piranha died. Now I am really paranoid.

I know you manly men are having fun nit picking his water quality but 10 fish = 20 eyes and only 1 of them is having problems. Seems more like a bite to me. Ive seen it twice on my fish and both times its healed fine. I don't think mine were as bad though.

don't worry too much, as long as you keep the water quality in check they should heal up in no time. piranha has crazy healing power.
same goes with feeding, as long as it doesn't put a dent on the water parameters you can feed away.
