there's some things I need to know. I was needing to know how should I go about cleaning a piranha tank without getting bitten? red belly piranha and/or black piranha. Also, I've seen people use sand in their tanks. Good idea? please tell me everything I need to know. Stuff like about feeding, growth rates, things from personal experience, etc.

Out of the 60 or so piranhas I’ve had only one Red P or Sanchezi I had to watch, others mainly scatter...

Just pay attention... you could get an extra long gravel vac. I may have used an egg rate divider at one point, clean half - shoo them to one side. Then clean the other.

if I get sand, how would I go about cleaning sand? gravel seems to trap too much stuff under it and I worry the thing I use to suck the junk out might suck out sand

Also, about "shoo"ing the fish with the divider method. What do you use to get them to move? I'm just wondering about if the fish happens to be not so passive like a type of serrasalmus and it attacks your object rather than moving

Recommend to me any type of piranha you'd like to, everyone!

Gravel vac lightly - had silica sand in one tank...

Use the divider, have you kept them before? They are mostly super skittish... Those egg crate ceiling light covers work great...

mostly they are more scared of you.

Just respect them, kids swim in the river with these fish,

good luck!

I have not owned any yet but I've had multiple tanks at once for years and many types of fish. I feel that I'm ready for new fish. Gotta start somewhere

Hi, had a Red belly piranha. Not that skittish as everybody has mentioned so shouldnt take any chances. Me had a bare bottom tank for the piranha as he would create lot of waste which was easy to clean without the substrate.
If you want to keep a substrate you can easily keep sand as that is easy to clean provided you have good filteration system. I personally stir up the sand in my current tank and let the filteration do its work.
Posted a few snaps of my Piranha.
