How many do you recommend for a beginner with a 120 gallon tank?

Get least 4-5 they tend to kill each other, preferably pick the same size & feed them well also provide some hiding places(drift wood)

there's some things I need to know. I was needing to know how should I go about cleaning a piranha tank without getting bitten? red belly piranha and/or black piranha. Also, I've seen people use sand in their tanks. Good idea? please tell me everything I need to know. Stuff like about feeding, growth rates, things from personal experience, etc.
I have 5 Caribes approx 5”. I stick my arms in there all the time. They’re not interested in anything they can’t get in their mouth. But careful! That might just be my fish. Yours could be different

Hi, had a Red belly piranha. Not that skittish as everybody has mentioned so shouldnt take any chances. Me had a bare bottom tank for the piranha as he would create lot of waste which was easy to clean without the substrate.
If you want to keep a substrate you can easily keep sand as that is easy to clean provided you have good filteration system. I personally stir up the sand in my current tank and let the filteration do its work.
Posted a few snaps of my Piranha.

Beautiful fish! I’ve been thinking of getting a few Red bellies because my Caribes are so timid. I was disappointed as to how skittish they are. They won’t come out to eat unless I turn the lights out and leave the room. Are your RBs pretty active and aggressive?

Well i dont have him with me currently but yes he was pretty active, would eat as soon as the food was put in the tank.

Hi man, I wanted to offer you some help on afew things you mite not have considered. So 1 is maybe you don’t have to get piranhas, like if it’s the unique look your going for then yuh you would, but a school or red hooks silver dollars or striped silver dollars are very pretty and the striped ones don’t get as big. 2 is that after piranhas reach adulthood it’s common for them to just start waiting on the bottom of the tank and act lazy and ppl tend to find it boring, an old fashion method to stop this is to keep them with tiger bards... I personally prefer keeping fishs from the same continent together but that’s up to you. If you want to keep species from the piranhas natural range I recommend small exodons with you’ve put ha as that are slightly larger then them but still active. Or go with piranhas with striped or spotted or regular silver dollars which are usually always active, will keep your piranhas active and energetic

Hey Thx for putting out the info. My Caribes seem to be getting pretty lazy. The only other fish in the tank are 2 large plecos. Maybe I should add some active fish. The piranhas won’t mess with the Tiger Barbs?
I do have 2 large Goldfish that I add in every once in awhile to control a snail infestation. Piranhas seem more active during that timeBut I take em out after a week or so because snails are eaten up and goldfish have received a thorough fin trimming lol! Maybe I’ll try Tiger Barbs. Thx
