piranha keeping concerns

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i wouldnt recomend plants ( live ), they need aot of light, p's do not like light you should actually dim you'r lights with some kind of tape ( black electrical works great ) darker the better for the p. but you will want light so you can see it. so just do strips, put the light on see if its ok, if it is leave it, if not add or take some off.

i wouldnt recomend fake, reb bellys tend to eat the leaves
sounds dumb, i thought it was dumb, i didnt have a problem for like 3 months, then he started to, looked like crap, also cant be healthy for the p's. if you want try it, just examin them daily make sure its ok.

Black water is great, very cheap imo.

peat moss in your filter will do the same as black water as sushi said. it will make your water darker for awhile, as black water will just for 1-2 days usally max!

i recomend a power head for current also extre filterage. p's like surrent they come from rivers.

i also have a well with semi-soft water, all my fish are fine =]

heres a little list for you also"

1p = 30
2p's = 50
3p's = 70
4p's = 90
5p's = 110

you say you have a 75 gallon? i would say 4, seeing 3 wont work for long at all. 2 of them will tag-team the other " YES correct p's cannot count " but they are agressive and will single one out. so i would recomend 4 if you could.

usally for filteration you go about 2x you tank size for GPH, i'd quad that honstly. so like if you have a 30, get a filter for a 60. ( or a filter for a 40, then get a powerhead and filter attatchment. EVEN beter filter rated 50 - 60 gallons and powerhead)

also heater, just get a heter rated for the size tank. just dont go the inexpsnive ones they take a while to start to work and they will not last nearly as long.

and thats about all for my imput

1 more thing:
:welcome: to ]V[ . F . K

any other questuions i would be glad to TRY and help.

well I'm going to get them at about 3/4'' so I was going to get 6 or 7 to make up for any casualties that may occur with the young and if I end up with 6 or 7 still when they're about 4-5" I'll sell them or split up the shoal.

I find that to be a good idea.

As long as you're not intentionally cramping your conditions, you're in good shape!! ^_^

you can always buy a RO unit for your homw then the tank will have very clean water suitible for them
RO units are a couple hundred $ but if you use it in your home (attached to the facuet) you can drink better water and the fish could live in it to so it would proablaby be worth the investment

w/o units are very proce, i'd say soft well water is ok. mine is all good.

but yea ALWAYS go even #'s so 6 would be good

I have found that using glass paint in colors like green and brown keeps down the brightness dose not effect the UV rating of the light so you can still grow plants and adds a nice golden brown color to the water

That's a cool idea Neekaragua!! I'll have to try that the next time I pick up paints!!

I think after you pass 4, you should be fine with odd numbers. considering that 4th on is just so you can keep the number at 3 or 3+ so 5, 6, or 7 would be just dandy. Just remember, the more you get, the more you'll have to move or get rid of later on. And when trying to decide which one(s) to keep, use the same method as you would buying a larger fish.

Clear, healthy eyes (no clouds)
good appetite
active but not stressed

That sort of thing
