After reading about the mouse vid and the thread made after it's closing about mods deleting posts. I have decided to do as Oddball sugested and make a ethics thread.

I personally do not find to much harm in feeding Piranha live food such as other fish and worms. I also do not find to much harm in Feeding Piranha a mouse. On the terms that the mouse will die fast. (with 20sec of initial bite) And it will be ate in whole by the schoal.

I do not find it responsible to feed Piranhas ANYTHING larger then the fish. Like a cat Something that is not normally sold as food. Now as I write NOT NORMALLY sold as food I mean the if here in the US we sell mice as feeders to snakes then mice as feeders to Piranha is not bad then either. But you woul not find kittens sold as feeders to snakes here. But if they were in another country then that is fine. Or at least fine in there reigion of the world.

I personally feel that feeding Piranhas some live food is a GREAT staple to there diet. I would not however have a big mouse pit in my house to feed My Piranhas mouse when they get feed live. But I also have toyed with the notion of feeding my Piranhas a mouse when they are grown.

It is a curiosity. A person keeps Piranha and they begin to wonder at some point in time What all this fish could eat. Some people take the extra step to find out what all they will eat. And some will never let the idea leave there mind b/c they do not find feeding live animals like mice to fish like Piranha ethical.

So in short I think we all need to take the things we read and see that have to do with piranha or any other preditory fish with a grain of salt. It may bother some and it may incourage others.

For those of you who find feeding Piranha live something that is wrong you are intitled to that opinion.

For those who find feeding Piranha live exciting or interesting you to ae entitled to that opinion.

Now with this being said I would like to remind you that this thread is disscusion based and in no way trying to sway someone from thinking one way or the other. But to inform each other on what you feel is eithical and why.

Also this thread MUST stay away from bashing ANYONE involed. If this is found out I do encourage the mods to delete posts. Or if it is a must do thing close or delete this thread.

KEEP IT CLEAN!!!

Here's my 2 cents if live food is for the well being of the pet and it does not involve cruel or unusual death for the feeder it's fine.

However if it's done for entertainment and to get your ro*&s off then I draw the line. And clearly these vids are intended to be nothing more than barbaric entertainment for the cerebrally challenged, they serve no other purpose.

The only thing I have ever fed my fish besides their diet of pellets, fillet and shrimp, is goldfish or rosie reds, but id wager to say in the last year I did it twice.
For the following reasons:
1.goldfish raised in fish stores are easy host to many internal parasites, they are cheap fish (as viewed by someone looking to turn a profit), and they are treated accordingly by shop owners. Not sure if you guys have encountered a fish with internal parasites, but I have once and its something that im not trying to experience again.
2. goldfish are high in
Thiaminase, which is a growth inhibiting hormone that is present in significant amounts in feeder fish. Its like mcdonalds for fish, a few times wont be devastating, but it will catch up to you.
3. the diet I provide my fish is more nutritious for them than feeders, which makes me happy to know that they are getting the best food, and I am giving them the best shot at becoming old and huge. Plus, seeing piranhas attack pellets is awesome, much better than feeders.
4. watching something get ripped apart just doesn’t really do it for me.
Ethically, I don’t know, I was never good at ethics, but this is the reason that I do it my way. to each their own though

nice copy and paste :D

to be honest i dont feed my piranhas feeder fish or anything live for that matter, like you negro damus i only feed my fish frozen salmon filets or other kinds of frozen fish fillets, an internal parasite is my worst fear and my biggest hope is to create another monster like that rhombeus OZZ on youtube. but if growing a true monster rhombeus isnt your goal then i would definetly give the live feeders. but like i already said i dont think deeding your piranha live fish is going to make it harder to own pirhana in the future. the only thing that could destroy our beautiful piranha keeping hobby is when complete idiots go out and release there fish into locaL habitats ,thats what we need to be worrying about not live feeding videos.

(the two fonts is because i wrote some of it in a blank email at work .... so if you mean copy and pasted from a blank email, i guess i agree.
i could see how it looks funny though, but its the truth)

i think feeding ANYTHING to piranhas is fine ( fish, worms, small children) as long as it is able to be eaten as a whole and not left sitting at the bottom of the tank suffering. Ive had problems with my piranhas not being able to finish a live meal and thats when i just take it out and feed it to another fish.

First of all, I just want to say that I respect everyone here greatly for calmly discussing a topic this intense:FIREdevilin a civilized manner without any arguing, snapping, belching, etc.:cool-1: I don't belive in feeding live food to Piranhas or anything else. I do understand that people will do it and that can't be stopped. I respect these opinions and choices as I hope they would respect my o/c. But I belive that feeder animals have rights too. People do have hobbies in breeding Goldfish, Fathead Minnows (that's how we ended up with Rosy Reds) and yes, rodents. And if us monsterfishkeepers...or in my case, monsterfishlovers:screwy:(yeah, I know.) if I saw someone treating an Arrowana with no respect, feeding it to...well, let's say a crocodilian, I might be mad. What I cannot STAND is when people go out and buy something like a Snakehead or a couple Piranhas so they can get pleasure out of feeding it rats, goldfish, baitfish, frogs, etc rather than for the love of the fish. That annoys me. These ppl have a fish that requires a certain level of care just so they can keep it in a tuboware container with cold water and toss it a few rats for fun.
Rock on, ]V[on$terfi$h Keeper$!!

Hello, quite the discussion here, when I first bought my RBPs, I discovered how much easier it is to look after them to any other fish I have had or animal. Alot of people said they were hard to keep and look after, lol, they have been so easy, and they are huge, I will never feed them a rodent of any kind. I don't care if they might get that in the wild, it is only by pure luck they do. I have feed mine, shrimp, bloodworm, worms, chicken, beef, pork, goldfish, perch, rockbass, roundgoby, trout, platties, liver, cow heart, mudcat, guppies, minnows.

I have seen videos of groups of piranha taking down cows and goats, birds, I just couldn't do it, the animal would have to be dead before I put it in the water.

They are a wild animal in their home they will do whatever they have to for life. It is only natural but when having them in captivity you should be able to make the right choice not to murder another animal in a drowning matter when you can get things to sustain them from grocery stores.
