Piranha Noobie

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Rhoms grow 1/2in a year so you got plenty of time with that tank. If you want him to display darker colors you're correct about the darker background and substrate. Good luck with him.

Another noobie question:

Does rhom prefer fast moving water flow?

The water output from the canister seems pretty fast for a 3 foot tank - I directed the rain bar to shoot the water near the surface level at the moment.

Sincere thanks in advance.

Yea piranhas enjoy nice flow but you should always leave a spot for them to rest......and I highly doubt the output of a canister is too much for a 3 foot tank

+1 for what SandNukka15 said.

Just think about their habitat; fast flowing rivers and heavy vegetation.
I turn my powerhead on for a good 4 hours a day.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the further advice.

The canister is place at same level as the tank just next to it; I guess that's why I felt the wave is abit stronger than usual. :)

Bagged him home today.

Put in a couple of small monos and red eye tetras to encourage him to swim around. Understand this species is skittish and tend to hide a lot. So now he is at end of the corner near the filter inlet. LOL!

Will try to upload some pics when he is more stable and outgoing.

Well if you get him to come out quickly then I applaud you. It took a full year for my Sanchezi to become comfortable enough to come out of his hiding spot.
No joke, a full year lol

Full year. I believe you bro. :(

My tank is place outdoor semi shaded; not too sure this will make him get used to brighter environment faster or stresses him out more.

At the shy stage, how do we know whether he is feeding well besides counting the live feeder fishes daily?

I dropped some beef heart inside but no interest shown - thankfully the monos and tetras ate it up.

It will take quite a while before one can break the fish off live food - during this stage. Wouldn't want to be dropping food in and messes with the water parameters.

Need some pointers here from all experienced folks.

Sounds just like my rhom when I first got it. It would hide behind a rock for about 6 months and didn't know the feeding routine at all. After about 6 months and multiple feedings, its behavior is identical to my other fishes now.
