I have 4 rbp tank that I would like to add a different substrate to. I was wondering if anyone had a good idea for the bottom of the tank? Also would a fine gravel (such that they use for Cichlid tanks) be okay? Thank you for your help!

Yes (fine) gravel is good choice . I had sand with my P's and it looked good when tank clean , But they shi! like a humen and it will just sit on top of the sand the gravel it will get down in there....... I recomend fine black gravel but suit your self with the color you like .
Sand is actually easier to clean than gravel as everything sits on top so you can just syphone it out.
With gravel you dont see it but its all still there.
I guess the outta sight outta mind logic works for some people though.
Personally I prefer bare bottom but either sand or gravel is fine as long as its properly maintained.
Just be carefull not to get any cichlid specific gravel though as those tend to mess with ph

If u do gravel vacume the "#u%k" out of it
sand is cool

Def have to maitain it properly.
I have had both sand and gravel, they each had pros and cons.
I ended up getting a bad algae outbreak on my white sand that I was unable to get rid of. Also the risk of it getting into filters was always a hassel and precautions had to be taken to prevent it from happening.
Gravel didnt look as good as sand personally but def did the job, just keep in mind that the thinner the layer the easier it is to keep clean, I once had a 4in layer of gravel because I had the tank planted, this was alot more difficult to keep clean even with alot of filtration.
After the headaches with both I decided to now go bare bottom, I'll admit that the look of it takes some getting used to but the ease of maintainence makes it all worth while.
