Piranha tank maitenence?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what species? how many fish? what size tank? filter? undergravel filtration? planted? these and many more factors come into play when asking questions like these, if your worried about being bitten dont be.... unless u have some kind of monstrous specimen. piranha tend to have messy tanks due to the foods they eat. cleaning should be more frequent

as long as they are WELL FED there shouldnt be a problem. try not feeding a HAPPY and HEALTHY tank of p's for 2 weeks then put your hand in there and see what happens. if ya get bit you know not to clean their tank again if they are hungry. hahahah. i have never been bitten by any of the p's that i have kept, but i cant say the same for the larger cichlids they were in with

How would you clean a pirahna's tank? Or how often... do you do water changes

Carfully !!!

They are pretty skittish fish anyway and will only attack if they feel threatened so as long as you don't alarm them you should be fine try using algea scrapers with long handles, Also when your changing your water use the same sort of method use a hose with a firm solid tube so that your hands are not in the water when your syphoning the water out !

Type- Red Belly
Quantity- 3
Tank type- Glass
Tank size- 55 Gallons
Gravel filter- None
Filter- I don't know what kind... but it is a sponge filter... two sided

[EDIT] Yeah I have been thinking about starving them... for a week or two until I feed them.... I tried giving them a $2 stake xD but they wouldn't eat... so what do you think I should feed them

I feed mine frozen brine shrimp and feederfish it is expensive but they will grow faster. If you don't want to spend alot of money try feeding them blood worms.

neighborhood cats cut up and flash frozen make an excellent source of protien for piranahs. we just take the kittens and HUMANELY :screwy: :screwy: sever their spine with some old sharp sharks teeth. the local vet said there is no suffering involved. :swear: :swear: just kiddin guys dont bash me please!!!! hahaha

For me they seem to like the dried shrimp. The dried shrim is nice and clean, O, and they absolutely love Frozen Bloodworms !

I also have 3 red bellies that are 5-6". I put my hand in there no problem...they swim away when they realise it's not food. They do ruin my fishnets and any bags I want to put them in tho...so you gotta be careful.

I feed mines beef heart I buy at the butcher whole and cut in sizes myself. I have also put a large piece of meat in there, they loved it...feeding frenzy :)

They also eat octopuss, squid, clams, mussels, shrimps, fish, feeders, etc...name it they eat it.
