Piranhas: being bitten

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I've never owned any but my aunt did and I cleaned the tank and they always bite not even just when cornered but always. They will bite no matter what. They draw blood as well and they have special gloves you can buy for aggressive aquarium fish they are like $20 from I think that pet place and if you don't use that expect to be bitten! They are very vicious! So you will most likely be bitten sooner or later. Good luck and they need huge tanks for a school

They must have been starving to act that way, sounds like your aunt wasn't taking proper care of them. Mine, which came from Angler, are terrified of my hands in the tank.

I had eight large red bellies for a while. I always stuck my whole arm in the tank while cleaning/moving rocks around. Red bellies are pretty skittish, and they always just darted away from my arm when sticking it into the tank.

When catching them to sell them, I, like an idiot, put my hand above the net to keep one from flopping out. I instictually do this with all fish, but don't do it with Piranhas! This was the result of that careless act:

i just thought this was a joke

They have different personalities and my aunts happened to be aggressive so they bit me and they do hurt so you will most likely be bit sooner or later I'm not saying they will intentionally go after you as they are very skittish fish but they will sooner or later bite you.

If they bite you they're taking chunks, post pictures of the scars or I'm gonna call shenanigans.

Something about your story doesn't gel.

He said THEY ALWAYS BITE WHEN CORNERED OR NOT- YOU WILL BE BITTEN.

The only explanation is they werent red bellys or you aunt must have fed them once every month.

Their natural instinct is to RUN AND HIDE FOR THEIR LIVES! I even have to be careful when crossing the tank or sometimes they will absolutly freak out and when 1 freaks they usually ALL DO! So if 1 rbp bit you the others would have likely followed and youd be missing a finger or 2. They prey on dead meat or very very weak or hurt fish/animals. The reason why they thrive and survive in the amazon is because they dont put themselves in dangerous scenarios. Imo they arent just hunters their also survivors under any circumstance even to the point of cannibalism!

Maybe im wrong... but i only keep rbp and have for some time now

No offense andrew but your perception of these amazing creatures is the reason why they have their horrible persona and in ur terms "VICIOUS" reputation as killers to begin with, BY saying "they bit me and kept doing it, drew blood blah blah!"

Atleast if you learned something we all win on this one! They have to EAT LIKE ANY ANIMAL OR FISH FOR THAT MATTER TO SURVIVE! Thats why in the wild they fin nip other pacu and eachother TO SUSTAIN LIFE instead of straight killing the fish or prey, so they will ALWAYS have sustanance to live on!

And shinanigans is such a perfect word! Lol
