yep the shoal are definatly macs however before they find the shoal there were some elusive piranhas that werent in a frenzy that kept retreating back further into the vegetation and to me they looked like some sort of pygo
I am not sure if we are talking about the same scene. It's on the regular DVD. Last scene of the show, after the end, where they explain how they shot the episode and what difficulties they faced. It's been a while since I hd it from Netflix, but I am fairly certain that the schooling P's in there are pirayas. Our neighbors have the Blue Ray, and it's not on there. Thus, it might not be on the DVD you saw?
this one seems to be pantanal, the wetlands, which is closer to the paraguay/bolivian boarder, p. piraya are from the eastern brazil, sao francisco system from what I understand. its not frequently video tapes, probably because its not frequently visited area.
most of the fish are maculatus type, piranhas. there are a few short shots of what seems to look more like ternetzi in there, goldish colored
harleyk has been in the hobby, he probably did see a different clip with better shots.
Thanks for the clip, jp80911! Now we are at least all talking about the same thing. I don't know for the life of me why they didn't include that into the BlueRay.

I've been in the hobby a long time, indeed - so long that I lose memory of something every time I learn something new
Bottom line: Thank you for the kind words and trust. However, I am also the first one to admit when I am wrong, and that was clearly the case here - my memory served me badly when I recalled the featurette I saw quite some time ago. Besides, you've got an excellent point that location alone doesn't make sense.
Which means the hunt is still on for a piraya documentary!
