Where the fish at the top of the tank "gasping"? 3 daily feedings would crank up nitrates quickly also.

I tested the water shortly after, the nitrates had spiked a little, but not severely. But I would imagine to a 3 inch Pbass a small spike would be plenty. They were breathing a little harder than normal this morning, I assumed due to stress from the medication. But, they were still very active and eager to feed. I gave them a small meal, one cube of frozen bloodworms, which they share with a pair of 4 inch RTCxTSN hybrids. Which by the way are doing just fine.

A very good point about the nitrates...this "grow out" tank only has under gravel filtration with suction via 2 power heads. Granted it is a very well established filter, the under gravel alone most likely was not enough to keep pace with all the extra waste. This one was my fault for sure.

Now the dillema...Pbass are few and far between around here. And ive got these two hybrid cats that are gonna grow like weeds. The 210 with double overflow 300g capacity sump etc. etc. is under way, hopefully set up and ready for fish within the next 60 days or so. By that time these hybrids will be able to inhale the Pbass that may be available by then...rather have the cichla than the catfish, but want both! I guess so begins yet another long wait for them to come back around. I really blew this shot :irked:

Well, I went out today and spent 100 bucks on oxygen infusion equipment. Im hoping with the new tank, and all its added filtration plus plenty of O2, Ill be able to run temps that high. In this case though I think over feeding spiked the nitrates and did them in. Ive raised many fish from juvie to adult, havent had a failure of this proportion in a long time. So frustrating, lesson learned.

you dosed the tank with copper meds and you have a catfish?

baby cichla can be difficult to keep if everything isnt perfect... there is always next time

No its not copper based, its a product called Rid Ick+, its supposedly safe for most scaleless fish, which is why I used it. Didnt seem to affect the cats much at all. This stuff has a small percentage of formaldehyde and zinc free chloride salt of malachite green. Thats what the bottle says anyways.

Next time will be perfect or else the 210 will become marine.
