Pitbulls attack mother, kills child(4 years old)

Interesting. I would never dream of not wanting my dog to bark at the door? Maybe it's just me(and I guess my girlfriend?) but I find it quite useful. The way I believe and have been told to deal with stranger anxiety is to tell people not to acknowledge at all and have a seat and engage in convo without paying attention to the dog till I brings a toy or nudges for pets. Works great for the people that listen, problem is not everyone does. People harder to train than dogs.

much as it drives me nuts, my weenie dogs are a alarm system, they doing there job.

Bingo. I am in no way lying when I say I suspect my dog has stopped a break in by barking twice. I have the photos of my punched in front door Window screen and my broken back door doorknob to prove it. I has a mean bark, noone else was home, noone entered the house.

I'm with you Ballin, not really sure where i Fit in this argument since i love dogs as well?

On a personal level though, i think the only way to really control these problems, without full on banning any species of dog would be to have an gov't agency setup where people who want to own certain more aggressive species of dogs need to prove they are training their dogs properly, and socializing them to try and avoid these problems, with possible yearly or bi-yearly checkups + licensing .

Also, having these types of dogs locked up safely in ones property is another important issue, since some of them do have immense agility and are able to scale 6' + fences and walls quite easily

never gonna happen imo.

pits are more likely to get completely banned than the chance of some gov agency getting setup to monitor licensing and such

I posted this on the odd start to November but thought it fit better here-

I was remided why I have a German Shepard today.

I came home after a day at my grandparents house at roughly 9:45pm and the neighbors greeted our family as soon as we pulled in to our driveway, they Asked if our dogs were ok. They said our dogs had been barking so loud inside our house that they could hear them inside of their home and thought that there was a dog injured in the woods. I went inside and found our German Shepard glued to the back door barking and growling like I've never seen her do before. I let her out on the tie out to let her do her business and heard 4-5 voices and what sounded like a bowling ball trying to go through the underbrush. I went inside to tell my parents and went out with the poodle and again herd the bowling ball sound. I told my dad and then he went in to the woods and said he herd the same thing I did but didn't see any but the dog was fallowing a scent trial in the sounds vicinity. The next morning we went out and found a ton of beer cans, cigarettes, and a small fire pit.

I read this in the other thread, shortly after it was posted and my immediate thought was that it's not like German Shepherds are the only dogs that would react that way.

Hello; barking at the door to alert you to someone is not what I was refering to. Such warnings are often a good part of having a dog. Your description was of the dog both barking and snapping at guests for up to five minutes after you let them in.

Dog barking to alert to a stranger or unexpected guest seems acceptable. Barking and snapping for several minutes, having to warn guests to not try to pet the dog and the other stuff seems very questionable.

Has'nt much of this thread been about the behavior of dog owners. You seem to be saying that your are aware of the poor behavior of your dog and the liability you face, while at the same time saying that you don't feel the need to do anything about it. What have I missed?

You missed a lot man, that post wasn't even directed to you. I posted about her when I was slow at work, just let it be because you have no way over text to know how the dog is acting so I don't feel you are in a position to say anything. I obviously over described it because I deal with liability claims for a living so if I were concerned I would be first to do something. This is not my first dog, i have been bitten by a dog and I have been present when another person has. I don't have strangers to my door on a daily basis. Maybe a weekly occurrence, once every few months she gets really spooked. That's it that's all, I tend to have 1 or 2 familiar visitors a day and she does nothing but get extremely happy. I'm not worried about it because she listens very well and will step away if i tell her to, so please don't lose sleep over me, and don't worry you are safe from my killer dog.
