Cool. I read on one of the bio-media boxes at LFS that say not to put directly inside aquarium. Thought I'd ask.

That was written on the side of the box because they didn't want you to put the BOX in the aquarium. If they didn't want the rings in there, they would have written it on the side of the rings.

Serious though ceramic rings in the tank will work. There is an issue that nitrifying bacteria like dark conditions better but that shouldn't stop you losing sleep as it's more about preferance than life or death for the little buggers.

It is completely true that most species of AOB & NOB (Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria & Nitrite Oxidizing Bacteria) prefer darker regions... they do not require darkness to thrive. It is commonly stated that they frequently live on sides of buildings in cities with higher levels of air pollution. They will naturally gravitate to the side of the building that gets less light or move towarsd cracks/crevices in the building, just like they will find the darker side of decor or move towards cracks in our aquariums...

They are also not in any way damaged by light, so if they are in an area that they are not comfortable, they will simply swim to a more suitable place. Most (maybe all?) species of AOB & NOB have tails and can swim...

i put both ...in the tank and also in the filter as well...
why take the chance....but ..there was this one guy which in MFK who gave me the idea on putting the biomedia in the tank and as well as the filter... which i have been doing that till now ...it works thou ..clear water., no bad water smells ....
it kind of relly help and made changes thou ..

Also, if you are a python user who dechlorinates after adding new water, you'll have stressed or killed bacteria in the tank while those in external places will be okay.

To reach the true potential of your bio media, you need to have a good amount of flow going over it. That's why it needs to be in your filter.

i was wondering dont worry i dont have a python so i havent been filling my tank witih toxic clean water haha

Well, many people do it many ways. I use a regular hose I screw onto my bathroom faucet and add dechlorinator every few minutes as the tank fills, with a final blast at the end. Closest I can get to adding dechlorinated water without hauling 25+ bucketfulls of water across the house. I do like buckets best, even up to my 75gal tank I used buckets, but 125g is just too much to haul on a 50% change.

As the others have said, of course you can put the rings in the tank.
Good way to “kick start” a new tank is putting some established media in it, either in a filter, or just hanging it in the tank.
Without a flow of water going through the media, it would seem a bit wasteful to me.
