I was just wondering how many, if any, of you put frozen food directly in the tank without thawing it first. I used to thaw krill and blood worms before putting them into the tank. Which seems to be the accepted way to feed dats on this site and others as well. A few weeks ago I poured some krill in my dat tank that wasn't quite thawed. My usually lazy NTTs attacked the frozen chunk and ignored the thawed krill. So I have been experimenting with my NTTs and ITs for the past couple weeks.
I have found that my dats eat more efficiently and are more aggressively when feeding when I put small chunks of frozen krill or blood worms directly into the tank.
When I put in thawed krill, the krill sinks to the bottom and the NTTs will not eat unless it drifts directly in front of them. The frozen chunks float and bob up and down and the NTTs will attack the chunk a soon as they see it.
My ITs are eating well as always but I have found by putting the blood worms in still frozen, more food gets eaten and less gets sucked up into the filter.
At first I thought the frozen food may harm the fish if they swallow a large piece, but so far so good.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? Is there any danger in putting frozen food in the tank?

Ive always fed mine like that, ive noticed that if they attack it the second it goes in sometimes i think its too cold for them so they leave it a minute and then shoot to the top to get it and like you say there is more competition that way.
Also when my aro goes for the frozen krill as soon as it goes in,he spits it out and swims round and comes back for it and does this until its thawed enough for him lol.

Hope this helps.

I always thaw my food as well, my pbass only hit it at the surface same with my dat so if it's not thawed it's not eaten

Right now my dats are a little too small to swallow the entire chunk of frozen food. They will bite and rip off chunks. I have noticed they do spit out the food that is still frozen only to eat it once it has thawed a little more. Since I have started doing this my NTTs are much more active. Soon I'm going to try to get them on pellets.

i have never thawed any foods for rays aros or tigers never had any problems

I find all my frozen food that go's into the tank defrosts pretty fast anyway. As long as it's not something thick i think it's fne.prawns etc fdefrost in no time at all.

Hmmnn... I guess I'm gonna try that today. I feed them 3" market shrimps by the way.

I've always thawed my bloodworms, krill and silversides in a cup of warm water before placing in the tank. I do so for several reasons, which include even and fair distribution of food to ALL fish. Some larger fish can consume an entire clump of frozen food. Also, some fish are temperature sensitive and don't respond well to cold food. It only takes a few minutes to thaw frozen foods in a cup of warm water.

Mine seem to like the attack part when its still frozen or thawing, its great to watch.
