Plagued by green water...

Its a algae bloom most difintely caused by direct sun light...water changes do not help....a diatom filter will take care of it within a hour...i have had this pop up every couple years in my 20 years of fish keeping....and always have had the diatom for this reason

Is the tint not coming from your driftwood or plant soil?
 
I don't think the driftwood is leeching anymore. In person it's a green tint as opposed to a brown tint.

Why would I need an algae scraper? I don't have algae on the tank / decor.

owain is refering to a scrubber not scraper. Scrubber uses a screen and light to build a layer of algae to consume nitrate.
