I just got a planiceps yesterday. He spends a lot of time near the top of the water column. Not at the surface like he's breathing but just swimming back and forth around the top of the tank about 2 inches or so from the surface. Is this normal?

mine lays on bottom in the same spot under a plant waiting on food. i almost never see him swim up to the top. mine is 14" right now. How big is yours and does it still eat ok?

Mine used to do that all the time. Do a little research you'll see it's completely normal

I took all the fish out and put them in the 600 exc. the planiceps. Since then he has been swimming back and forth nonstop.
My wife keeps telling me to move him cause he misses his friends:ROFL:
He is staying in there because he was eating his "friends".

lol, well if he was eating his friends he was just trying to make sure they will always be a part of him! lol. Yeah mine has a favorite spot and never moves unless the lights are out. He stays in hunting mode alot. I am letting him eat quarantined feeders til he is completly healed up. I don't want to stress him to switch right now to shrimp, but eventually he will. I have been quarantining about 2 dozen fathead minnows every week for him. After 1 week with no problems he gets them. Never see him eat, but they are always gone. Every once in a while he'll swim in the current, but then retreats back to his plants to lay there some more. Very rare to see him move.

I think its normal behavior. He feeds like a son of a B1tch, and always has a fat belly. My water parameters are fine also. Guess like everything it's on a fish by fish basis.
