how would you suggest beefing up the bracing?
To be honest, you'd need so many cross members it may become not be practical with this design. There is a thread on here from a guy who did it with this sort of design I just can't seem to find it at the moment

Swap the 2X4s with 2X6's and it might work. 2900 gals. seems like a lot of weight on the 2X4's. Anyplace you wanted to remove a 4X4 and replace w/a 2X4, use concrete. Use as much concrete as possible if you want less lumber...

I know material cost in Hawaii are high. If your buying a liner to put in the wood frame and already digging a foot deep. Why not dig another 2-3'+ and do away w/lumber altogether.

If done right, your parents won't want you to move out...

Also if you dig it all in ground, it's not as permanent as you think, simply fill it in if the new owners don't want it

if you went without the 1' underground you wouldnt need to beef the bracing. just make it 12x8x3, you would only fill that to 2'8" or so and you have plenty of bracing for 2'8" worth of weight, only thing you might want to do is turn every other 2x4 brace at an angle running from the bottom of the brace before to the top of the next one then alternate top of the brace before to the bottom of the next brace since your at a 12' width. not more bracing just a diff style. the diagonals will tie it together side to side as well as top to bottom kind of like a trussle style bridge. if you seal the plywood to hold the water yes you want to use wood glue. you want everything as sealed as possible.

alright everyone. thanks for all the replies. i have scrapped the plans and decided on trying another way to achieve the same results (above and below ground, windows, no cement).. gunna start a new thread with the design

Nice project but where are you planning to get the glass?I have been looking around, any suggestions?

to be honest in terms of getting glass, i kinda have no clue. it depends alot on which way i want to go (plexi or glass, thickness).

at first i was planning on getting glass atleast 3/4in glass, so i called around to some local places. most said that they dont carry anything thicker than 1/2in. and those that do have thicker were like atleast 300-400 for the dimensions i wanted.

so i started looking online, and i came across the anythingfish's calculator and it said that with the window sizes 24"x48" that i was planning to use, need to be 1/2inch to have a safety factor of 4 which is on the safer side (or thats what i'm guessing anyway, dont take my word for it).

i looked at some online vendors and the shipping for glass is way more expensive for glass because of the weight, so i decided on plexiglass. so far the cheapest i found for 1/2" thick 24"x48" was 77bucks a sheet and 90bucks for shipping putting the total at around 250. i still have to look for plexiglass locally so i'll let you know what i find.

its cool and all living here, but building materials and shipping prices are way too expensive
