Hey MFK I'm planning on participating on a fish collecting trip with in the next two years! Iv done lots of reading on it and research on the Internet. How many of you have been on a collecting trip recently(last 5 years or so), what did you take and what did you experience? I'm still in the planning stages of the trip, I would rather start getting stuff now and be prepared now then all at the last minute. I'm also planning on redoing my tanks before hand. I plan on turning my 125g into a Peruvian biotope and my 29g into a blackwater biotope for apistogramma and smaller fish that are collected:) remember this isn't for a while, due to finances, planning and school! I'll keep you updated on everything that goes on!:) thanks for your time guys, any comments, ideas or questions are welcome:)

Hi Ryan yes I can help you out. First off are you going with a guide? You will need the correct paper work inorder to take fish back to the US. No paperwork for customs equals fish taken by Fish and Wildlife. Make sure they can get this paper work for you cuz it needs to happen a month or two before you get to the country.

The two easiest ways to catch fish and with a seine net and cast net. If you have a guide hopefully he'll have a seine net cuz they are big and you'll have to find someone in to make one for you. Learning to throw a cast net is essential! I recommend buying a 6' castnet and looking on youtube for videos on learning how to throw it.

Other useful things to bring: battery powered air pumps, hand & dip nets, water conditioner, fish bags and rubber bands, styros that fit your suitcase, buckets for putting fish in, fishing pole and tackel, flashlights, bug repellent, sunscreen, etc...

Most important thing you can do while collecting is twice daily water changes! No pointing in catching fish just to kill them.

Btw who are you going with? Have fun!

Yes, I plan on going with Margarita tours or a guided fish collecting group. I will look into the paper work, but there are a few people that iv talked to and they said Margarita tours takes you to a fish wholesaler at the end of the trip and they will send up your fish because they already have the proper permits and papers. but like i said ill continue to do more research!

I do know that the organized trips already have seine nets for the groups use. I also heard that they recommend you bring a cooler for fish transport, have you done this? it seem like an extra cooler would be a pain to get through US airports.

Thank you for all your input! I really appreciate your time, and knowledge.

They might be referring to a styrofoam cooler not a Coleman (or similar) cooler. It's good to have your own Styro so you can keep bags of fish you want in your possession. Sadly I've heard of people stealing others fish or the fish you want might not get the proper water change regime needed if not in your possession.

This is very interesting, i am actually planning on heading to Irian and then Papua new guinea in 6 months or so if all goes well. anybody knows any technique
on catching fish without injury for the fish? and how to keep the water oxygen levels during transport?

Hmm. I'll email someone that hosts the tours and ask the cooler question and such. Thanks again for your input. I'll most likely have more questions haha.
