Planning my new tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Unfortunatly craigslist, or even the local classified adds here are somewhat lacking(On an Island with population of about 13,000 borough wide), I considered africans but we use cisterns here in Ketchikan so out of the faucet the PH is 6.0(as low as my test kit goes anyway) And if i remember right africans need a more alkaline PH.

cover the bottom with crushed coral....it'll raise your PH.:D

Thanks for all the replys everyone, I'm still fiquering things out. But once I have my tank set up and cycling(next couple weeks or so) i will be sure to post some pictures, but for now more research lol

if you are considering the 75 make the jump up to the 90.

the extra height makes the tank look a lot nicer. and the extra water volume helps.

another tank that is nice is the 120 4x2x2. its a lot of gallons in a 4 foot space if space is a consideration.

if not, go 125, or even the 150 (a 125 on steriods).

Man, if you like big fish, I wouldn't go smaller than the 125. in the 75, you'll buy 2 or 3 mid-size to big fish, and realize that your tank is already kinda overstocked as the fish grow. The 125 is way better for things like crenicichla, as they are fast swimmers and need the 6-foot run, plus the water volume is going to broaden your horizons big time. Not having a lot of extra money after this purchase isn't that big of a deal... it just makes it more of a long-term project! You don't want to buy a 75 and get bored after a year. If you get the 125, and it takes you a couple years to get it just how you want it, no problem! It keeps your interest going...

Thanks for the suggestions, I think ive pretty much ruled out the 75 all together. I asked for a quote on a 120, but they said they only had 75,90, and 125. How much do you think it would cost to ship a tank like that?

Man, you're lucky you can find a 125 in K-town. Jump on it, you'll be happy with the extra size over a 55 or even 75. Doubt you'd find a used tank the size you want there, but you can always put up a "wanted" notice.
Oh, I live (lived) in Juneau and know how hard it is to get things in Southeast. I'm in fish keepers heaven down here in Houston (compared to Ak). Fishing sucks though, so does the weather. Winters sure beat those back home though. Anyway, starting to ramble...
Get the biggest you can afford or find, you'll be much happier in the long run. In terms of species to keep... a few SA's like oscars or green terrrors would be great. Maybe a mixed collection of medium sized CA's like firemouths. Crushed coral will help with ph if you want africans. Check with the pet store and see what they do for that problem. Good luck.

Well it looks like i pretty much have my heart set on the 125, maby i could do a wet/dry+AC110s to cut down on initial costs, and who knows maby it would work better then a XP3?

i agree the 90 isnt worth the extra money but thats just cuz im all about bottom surface area. id say 75 and 125 depends on what u wanna stock. 75 is big enough for most fish in the 12 inch range but a 125 u might be able to fit 2-3 of those big guys. so depends on what u want.
