im planning on keeping poison dart frogs. i read a lot about them but i want to know if i can just throw in a bunch of Springtails and have them multiply in a 30 gallon so i dont gotta go through so much trouble of dealing with live food. hate live food.

also big question. will the terrarium smell? its gonna be moist and theres gonna be crap accumulating on the dirt.

what are Springtails? -food? -a species of frog?

Darts need to eat often and you must offer a lot of food at once to ensure the frogs find it in the fancy vivarium set up. There is no way around this. The vivarium may always have an odor to it b/c it is such a wet/moist set up, with dirt and such, but it won't be overpowering at all. Likely not noticeable unless you were to stick your nose in it.

Arent spring tails the baby crickets? Dart frogs need live food regularly and in such a small enclosure i doubt you can get the balance of predator and prey.

I hate live food too thats why i gave up on predatory reptiles.

NO the tank will not have a bad smell. Just a woody dirt smell but onyl when you put your nose in the tank.
The glass top that you need will keep the smell inside the tank.
Yes you can add springtails to the tank a few week before you add the frogs to give them time to multipy but you will still need to the feed them other food items. Fruit flies ro pinheads or both.
The springtails will help breakdown the "crap" in the tank and the plants will use it for fertilizer.
there is no way to get around buying or culturing FF or buying or growing your own pinheads.

they will need fed daily. your going to have to feed ff or springtails wether you like it or not. you will have to dust your FF daily also. the terrarium will not sme. use live plants to break down the poo.

thanks for the answers. and there has been no example of anyone getting their PDF to learn to eat prepared foods? if i can get a baby jardini and all my other fish to eat from my hand i think i can do anything

dont know how much i hate dealing with bugs and live food.

Dont get them unless you have access to live tiny food and dont have a problem with insects as they wont go after non moving food and getting tiny insects to move if dead esp in the numbers they eat is impossible

I keep golden mantellas . In NY I could buy tin fruit flies, live springtails in lfs ,etc easily here like everything else its impossible to find thus culture my own.
They do not recognize non moving insects as food .

You can use fruit flies-pin head crickets- springtails all cultures can be bought online (well springtails might not culture but can be bought online) but no getting around MOVING food .Pin head crickets IMP eat the plants and are the hardest for the tiny frogs to catch not to mention they grow fast so I avoid them

Lots places sell cultures online I got my springtails from here -
http://lfscultures.com/cultures.html but shop around .

dart frogs though tiny require a lot of tiny food . I have never kept them but Mantellas are same size and eat a lot for their size
