Planning on using a proflex 4 sump - 1 return pump or 2?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Will do!

You're right about it being difficult to find 1" barbed Y fittings! I found 1 on Fleabay and it's in the UK.... and it's $30! AND I'm not sure they ship to the U.S.!!!

What you talkin bout squirtle?

I sold all my lagunas for wavelines :P haha Nice to see someone else is up to date!

They are AMAZING! I am so happy to head height makes an amazing difference, most my tanks are 3 ft high or on a tier system so end up being a good 1.5m off the floor which is why lagunas did such a poor job compared to DC Pumps. the head height. + the wattage. My 10 000s use 80W which is almost the same as Laguna 6000. Best part is the 10 000 is almost pushing 10 000. not like my 9000 that was pushing 4000L lol.

I jumped once I found out they are made by the same people who build the lagunas and many other good pumps. I also work for a engeering company with a plastic firm and when I saw the picture the plastic looked very nice and thick/strong - yeah yeah what a freak :P. anyways they are built great and work amazing the food mode + soft start its truly amazing. The only test is how long will they last? but with a 2 year warranty not much too lose.

Only issue is the std tube size is 32mm not 1 inch (25mm) being motor feed not sure how bad this effects the flow I have to going threw some dodgey tubing thats a bit bigger then 25mm. But I imagine if you use 25mm you may lose a little flow.

Guess I was your guinea pig! Oh yeah cant wait for the power bill!!! if I am correct I have saved almost 120$ a month on power :D
I also love having the return on top of the pump another painful thing about Laguna always had to elbow up or so else I take the pump out of the case, my SW tank I had to bleed off because of this the power was too strong the Laguna connector thing kept blasting off spraying sw all over me! having it on top creates less back pressure for my setups which is great.

I have a 3000 and 5000 coming too. 3000 using 25W and 5000 40W cant beat it. 3000 even has a 3m head height lol.

I only tried them out because I got offered to try one for free cant be happier. None the less laguna would still be my no.1 option if I couldnt get DC, but power/head height/ price/ size/ functions > all over the Laguna if only it could handle solids it would A++! lol.

Theres also another pump down here DC too but its like 100$ for 10 000LPH at 80W but not controllable like the waveline, being DC i imagine you can mod it anyways my friend uses one of these made in the same factory as Laguna and waveline he says the build is a lot cheaper i.e thinner plastic but he sees it as a pump if you setup and dont move touch much it should last too. I have to try one.

Well, that is a convincing argument in favor of the wavelines.... I'm sure I could figure out the tubing situation somehow, and I didn't realize that the laguna's would require an elbow to get it to pump UP.

After a bit of searching though, it looks like these pumps can cost more than double what the lagunas do! Is that right, or am I looking at the wrong sites?

The Waveline's definitely sound promising. If they can prove to be more reliable than previous DC pumps I will be swapping out my Lagunas for them too.

From what I've read on a bunch of reef forums, the Royal Exclusiv Red Dragon DC pumps launched with a lot of fanfare/hype but people ended up having all sorts of issues with them (lots of unhappy customers, especially since those pumps were very expensive), so that's why I'm curious to see how the Wavelines perform over time. I haven't been able to find a distributor in the US that actually has any Waveline's in stock, but the prices I have seen for the DC 10000 seem very reasonable at $300. IIRC, the Red Dragons were even more efficient than the Wavelines, but they ran $800+.

Squirtle, please keep us posted on your experience with these pumps. I'm really interested to hear how they work out.

John, You don't need to run the Laguna in the cage that comes with it so it's pretty simple to plumb one without an elbow. I am running the 4200 which comes with an alternate intake cover (see screen shot below), but I believe the 4200 is the only model that comes with that smaller intake screen...rigging up a screen for the smaller pumps would be easy enough through.

Just a head's up that in 2012 Laguna came out with their "Next Generation" pumps which are a bit more efficient than previous models. The Pre-2012 Max-Flo 2000 draws 100 watts whereas the "Next Generation" Max-Flo 2000 (2012 Model year and on) draws only 78 watts. You will notice that the pre-2012 models are offered for quite a bit cheaper than the newer models, but they are less efficient; just something to keep in mind if you are looking to place an order.
