Planning to build this

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Chompers, you're all lucked out. No sisters. Hot nerdy girls are scarce resources... Kinda like Black Arows. But good luck with the search :D

As for the design, I also think it has reached a point where it’s done. The only place I can think of where I can improve on strength is in its actual construction. I will definitely go for your first proposed method on the segmented centre beam.

Construction will commence in early November. For some reason I decided to start studying again, and it's hit the wallet hard! So after exams, I'm building a MFK's TANK!

Just a quick update.
Here's what I hope the finished product will look like.
I'm leaning towards the white but, it might be a black or cherry wood finish. Either way, the color coat (or stain) will be coated with a polyurathane clear coat or two or three. That will give it an almost plexi glass kind of finish.
I can not wait to start!!! :nilly:

Lucky you...my exams are not until the first week of December. But I am working on funding from the university for a large fish tank in one of the engineering building atriums. Can't beat a free fish tank (sort of). And I will get to play with it while I am at school. :naughty:

Well, I also question your stand design. Nice "design", but the strenght of the stand will not hold all this water. The center "beam" you put there will bend, if not break. That 3/4 plywood could be broken easily by pressing hard enough between the beams. Now I think what was mentionned by Stinker is a good solution to this.

It needs more strenght IMO.

Oh and you mentioned you were on a budget, dunno about where you live but here doing this plywood-only stand woulc be more costly than using 2x4 framing...but then proving a point is important :D

Laminated Board(Plywood is stronger than dimensional lumber)

Chill-FAN, I use Google Sketchup. You can download it free from http://sketchup.google.com . It's very easy to use.

wizzin, thanx.

Lil_Stinker, I'm still busy building the "prototype" for this puppy. I'm glad I did build a prototype before diving into the construction of the big boy. Prototype slash practice tankI've learnt a lot about the resources available to me. These projects take time, space, money, materials, oh and the Girlfriend doesn't see helping me as "spending Quality time".
But never fear, I am going to build the big tank, and I will start a thread on it. The design and materials I intended on using just changed a bit.

Ketamine, keep the faith bro

The Amazonian, Yea, I still recon that design will be plenty strong. And I would like to prove it. But I realised that I'm building the big tank for me, and not to prove a point to those who question the strength of Plywood.

Just in case any one wants to know. The construction of the stand for this project will commence in about 10 days. Game on! I already have the glass for the tank, and the bottom piece for the sump. So the sooner the stand gets done, the sooner I can start on the rest. :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

oh, tank dimensions... 96"w x 28.3"d X 34.6"h (2440mm x 720mm x 880mm)(Water level held at 25.5" (650mm) via overflow)
