I've never been a real big fan of Mealies. Yeah sure, an animal can survive it's whole life on them but look at their nutritional value. Compared to crickets they loose in every category except for fat content. That means you have to feed more mealworms compared to crickets to get the same nutrition value. Also some species of reptiles can have trouble digesting their hard exoskeleton.
But keeping crickets as feeders isn't always fun either. They stink, can hop and escape and produce noise unlike mealworms. Mealworms also have the advantage that you can contain them in a feeding dish so none escape.
I haven't bought mealworms in 15+ years of keeping reptiles, are they that expensive now that you want to breed them? I don't know if it's really worth it unless you have a lot of animals to feed. If you want something that is easy to keep and breed try dubia roaches. They're probably one of best, most healthy feeder insects you can get. Just my 2 cents.
