Planning to get Leopard Gecko

I've never been a real big fan of Mealies. Yeah sure, an animal can survive it's whole life on them but look at their nutritional value. Compared to crickets they loose in every category except for fat content. That means you have to feed more mealworms compared to crickets to get the same nutrition value. Also some species of reptiles can have trouble digesting their hard exoskeleton.

But keeping crickets as feeders isn't always fun either. They stink, can hop and escape and produce noise unlike mealworms. Mealworms also have the advantage that you can contain them in a feeding dish so none escape.

I haven't bought mealworms in 15+ years of keeping reptiles, are they that expensive now that you want to breed them? I don't know if it's really worth it unless you have a lot of animals to feed. If you want something that is easy to keep and breed try dubia roaches. They're probably one of best, most healthy feeder insects you can get. Just my 2 cents. :)

I heard Dubia Roaches are great also!! the mealworms are just dirt cheap but they seem very easy to breed so i dont have to make the trip in purchasing more i guess and have a readily supply? My family already has problems with worms/crickets i would have to hide the roaches haha :). These live food are mainly for the single leopard gecko i have, who knows maybe i'll end up with more in the future ^_^. I'll prolly look at you Vicious for some more leopard or probably start crested geckos if you have some in future:)

Just tell your parents that the dubia roaches are beetles. That's what I tell my wife. :D

It's fine to feed mealworms but it's also a good idea to vary the diet a little and add some other types of feeders such as crickets, roaches, silk worms, phoenix worms, etc...

HAHA thats good excuse but i dont think it work with my parents haha. And oh man i dunno what imma do if i get married with my g/f lol she doesnt like most reptiles with the exception of turtles/tortoises. i shall give occasional crickets and i have to look into phoenix worms! i've been around local pet store and some never even heard of them. They're supposedly offer really high calcium for your reptile/animals. As for Roaches i've seen the Madagascar hissing roaches in the shows some funky looking insect

Go to the reptile conventions in LA , they have everything u would need and more . im saving up for this september in anaheim .

wow sweet i fed her today and she ate all the mealworms!! i use the tweezers and it helped her figure out how to grab the mealworms from the dish/ground without letting them go, even the larger ones that she would not touch before. She was excellent at catching crickets and had troubles with mealworms cause she would drop it from her mouth due to the length of the mealworm (she thought it was a one snap bite then swallow it cause the crickets were smaller then between her eyes) but i think she got it down a bit. cheers!!

Haha yeah ozz i was at the Pomona fairplex reptile show i saw all sorts of feeders there but i was holding back not to purchase something, prior to getting my leopard gecko... well i ended up with a gecko the following day haha. "Rainbowmeal worms" is close by my house and thats were i went to pick up those mealworms and wax worms. For sure i am planning to go to the Anaheim one that is like turtle/tortoise season!! i am now eying other morphs of leopard gecko and crested geckos :). Were you able to sell ur sand boas?
