http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVjc9epOUog, anyone know where i can get the blue background and if colored rocks help with flowerhorn color intensity? also, is it ok to feed a flowerhorn a pellet only diet? im afraid of feeding it frozen or live foods cause of the risks. i feed mine hikari cichlid gold and new life spectrum formula pellets. i do 2 days of hikari cichlid, and 4 days of new life spectrum. and 1 day skip day/water change/tank cleaning day. is this a good schedule? feel free to correct me or give me opinions advice on any changes i should make or what i should do to improve my feeding schedule, etc. thanks all.

If you want to spend a lot on a background pet stores. I use blue gift wrapping paper. Your diet sounds fine. I use food made for fh but that's a whole different debate. Here's an example pic

I and a lot of other fish lovers paint the back of the tank. I've used blue wrapping paper but once it gets wet, it's over. Also, if you want to have a clean looking tank then paint it because you will have to get the background paper cut just right to make it look good but you can also see the tape. You can use tape to cover up the frame and just paint the tank. Is your tank acrylic or glass? If it is acrylic, then I would use regular background that's plastic from your LFS other wise you won't be able to get the blue paint off the back without scratching the acrylic. I have a glass tank that I painted black. Made my fish look too dark so I used something to scrape the old black paint off and painted the background blue. Paint on a glass tank is the best because you can take the paint off the glass without scratching it. You will love the blue background and that's what a lot of flowerhorn keepers use because it shows off the red coloring. Just don't have the blue color be too dark. Also, as far as substrates, I used to use river rock an pebbles but it was hard to clean and the color of the fish really sucked. I think the best color that is bright. I use crushed coral, charcoal, green and red substrate and the colors really pop. Good luck and remember to get the flowerhorn you want and not one that you want to get because flowerhorn grading is a crap shoot so you might as well get a fish that you like and that one might surprise you. Just don't spend too much because you will be in the poor house if you get flowerhorns that are MP's and not have enough experience keeping them. Start slow and you will be happy with whatever flowerhorn you get. I don't know a lot about flowerhorns much so I'm just going on what I've been thru. Good luck, Ed.

thanks man. yeah i just bought one from lakefishex like 2 days ago. its a 5.5 inch SRD short body. big ass kok and really nice red colors. heres a pic of him.

shakalaku, my tank is glass. and i thought paint was toxic. if you paint the outside, couldnt some paint get into the tank like by vapors and stuff? cause my tank temp is really hot like 86 degrees my flowerhorn loves it he swims so much and has so much energy. everytime i open the top of the tank its really steamy and warm in the water, some of the vapors coming out could mess with the paint and could cause problems right?

I've always used paint for years after having the paper or plastic background have some shiny spots because the background is not flush with the tank so air gets trapped between the tank and background. I've painted the back of tanks with fish in it or not. I've never heard of anyone's fish get sick or die because of the vapors which aren't strong enough to hurt your fish so don't worry about it. Remember, use paint if you want a nice background and don't use any other background unless you want to see spots on the background because of the air bubbles. Good luck and keep asking questions, Ed.

so can u explain to me what a masterpiece is?

I'm pretty new at flowerhorns also and there's a lot of information to know. One person's opinion can be totally different from another's as to what is a MP and what grade the fish is. So, I just make my own decision about my fish and consider my best looking one, my masterpiece. No fuss and no having to ask 100 people what a masterpiece is and getting 100 different opinions, Ed.
