plant filter on a budget

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why aren't refugiums used as much in freshwater setups? It seems like the saltwater guys swear by them, but this is the first I've heard of using them for freshwater filtration.

Second question - does this kind of setup require CO2?

You haven't?! We have a couple a week on average. Try a search on here for refugium / refuge / fuge / planted sump to name a few.

Some are also using hydroponics / aquaponics.

Floods? What would I know about floods? I havent had any floods for at least a WEEK now!:headbang2

You can do it on a budget, the toerags round here keep nicking the streetlights, they are HPS...but the aint using them to grow catails!

The advantage of growing plants in the air, with their roots in the water is they generally grow a lot faster cause of easier acess to CO2. Put the refugium/aquaponics set up on the window sill as that will drastically reduce the amount of light you need to add...and your leccy bill!!!!

I've had my share.

Very cool idea. A window sill bog. I wonder how hard it would be to hide the plumbing, have an attractive plant display and achieve enough growth for meaningful export.

Im have a 24" by 12" by 12" on my kitchen window sill with water marigolds and some unidentified reed grasses with white cloud minnows. The reeds were 5' tall! They died back over the winter though to mu suprise but are coming back now. I guess they respond to the intensity of light.

So i'm more or less new to this fishy buisness..

all this talk of "windowsill bogs" has me thinking...

just how well do these work? could one be used without any other filtration? how big would it need to be?
