What kinds of plant will make it so you will have to clean your aquarium a LOT less. Thanks

Try a ton of moss balls check out a guy on YouTube called bauribob he is amazing and he has a sump and plant only filtration other than the sump which isn't that much for five turtles and a ton of corys there are other plants that help but not sure which type and also anachris absorbs a lot of sand if you have a sand tank I have one and if the sand moves in the water when it settles it turns out all over the anachris so I think it absorbs all materials in water not sure

Anything fast growing. I've had good with java fern in my 40g, never do water changes and never been over 40ppm nitrates. I've seen bamboo and pothos used frequently

Although plants are beneficial in an aquarium, they are not a substitute for general aquarium maintenance. Plants as well as fish appreciate a water change. If you want to clean your aquarium less, get a large tank and keep a few small fish in it.

Does it just sit in the aquarium or and filter the aquarium.

yer there is no substitute for good old water changes 50% a week a few plecs and i only have to clean my front glass once every 3 or 4 months .. but floating plants like water lettuce are fantastic because they grow and divide fast = use up a lot of nitrate and phosphate , plus they cover the surface and stop a lot of light reaching the rest of the tank which in turn reduces algae.

plants will actually dirty ur tank up and esp clog ur syphon depending on the plant at first. But once they settle in they do more good and depending on the fish they can stir them up and up root them and this can become annoying although alot of ppl have succes w/ plants, moss balls and duck grass are a good place to start.

The plants will benefit your waste cycle and oxygen depending on day or nite but they are no xp4.

I think everyone is assuming the plants referred to were aquatic. there are several emergent plants that can be harvested that will help to reduce nitrates etc. There is a giant thread on plant filtration in that sub forum. Vermiponics/Aquaponics are designed to use plant as a harvestable "crop" where the plants and grow beds work as biologic and mechanical filtration on tank used to raise fish crops. Freshwater refugiums have been used to grow emergent plants as filters similar to what saltwater tank do with refugiums and things like copepods etc..
