How big is the tank? Golden shiners are awesome, but they need a lot of space or they start getting really anxious and jittery.

Well the tank is 315 gallons. 78" long and 30" wide. I think they'd have plenty of space in my tank.

Well, they're normally seen at 3-6" long, but I've seen some wild ones that must have been at least 8", and they can reach up to a foot long. They're very active fish, and it's best to have at least a foot of swimming length per each inch of shiner length. They're like danios, always moving.

Yea I think I may just do the shiners. They seem to be pretty active and get to a good size so that my angry little predators won't try to feed on them, at least not yet. How big of a school do you think I should do?

You'll want at least 6, preferably more. 8 is probably a decent bet.
You might be able to get them at a bait shop, but you'll absolutely want to QT them very thoroughly and treat for parasites. You might also be able to net some for yourself, depending on local laws, though you'll need to acclimate wild-caught ones slowly to the temperature of your systems. Also, they have fairly high metabolisms, so they do best with a good source of oxygen.

I found a few bait shops nearby that keep shiners, so later today I'll be off to see if I can find any of a decent size. And I'll be sure to treat them for parasites since who knows what kind of awful conditions these shops keep them. I'll probably be getting around 10 of them because I know that my motoro will have his way with at least one of them.
