Plant friendly silver dollars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depending on the size of your tank, pink tailed chalceus make great shoaling tank mates for south American cichlids and they don't touch plants.

We could do with knowing what type of cichlids you are keeping them with and the size of tank they are in.

No cichlids...
Just a group of 4 Boulengerella maculata in a 75 gallon. They're a very nervous predatory fish. A type of false gar.

Sorry I don't know why I presumed you were keeping them with cichlids,my mistake.
They are a type of pike characin aren't they?
Have you considered a shoaling catfish like Pimelodus pictus?
A group of hemiodus or larger anostomus species.
They would need to go in fully grown or they may be preyed apon.

Those are yellow fin chalceus, aka tucan fish. Close relatives of the pink tails.

I can tell you from keeping them that they DO eat plants, even anubias!

Is there a dither fish like silver dollars that doesn't eat plants?
Research some of the disc characins it's hit or miss with larger tetras have you thought about bleeding heart tetras they are plant friendly and get a very good size. Other fish which have the same appearance as a silver dollar are the DISCUS TETRA they are plant friendly and active

Red tail chalceus tends to be a catch all name used for both species,at least it is in the UK. I agree mine are the ones referred as toucan fish.

Mine have never shown any interest in any plant matter and I have seen many in planted tanks. I guess it must depend on the individual fish if yours have.

I had some jungle val, anubis and green tiger lotus in a tank with silver dollars and cichlids, never saw the silver dollars touch a plant.

Interesting. Is that a photo of yours, or do you have pink tail characins? What plants do you have that they don’t touch?

I have chalceus erythrurus the toucan fish and often called pink tailed chalceus. They are mine in the picture.
My tank is not planted as I have silver dollars and Severums.
I do offer lettuce, baby leaf spinach and over grown vallis leaves to my silver dollars. My chalceus ignore it.
