my java fern has hair growing on it, what is it and how do i fix it because it grows on my filters also, water crystal clear and all fish are healthy.

That would be green hair algae. It was my java moss that was most susceptible normally. And it occurred (for me) in parts of my tank that did not get any current and were fairly stagnant. I dare you to put a bubbler or a powerhead in there if your case is similar to what mine was ;)

Short or long - green or black hairs?

Long & green go with Joshy...

Short and black bottle brush algae.

Both a pain, but can be dealt with.

let us know.

short and black, what cures it?;)

overdosing with flourish excel. or take the plant out and soak it in tetra aquasafe for a couple minutes.

If it's beard algae it can't be removed mechanically, grows in thick patches, and is caused byany and or all of these: high nitrates / high phosphated / low carbon dioxide levels.

Depending on what the tank tank inhabitants are, Siamese Algae Eaters are your best bet, followed by the American Flag fish.

Chemically, Simazine (Aquarium Pharmasuticals...Algae Destroyer) or copper.

Be careful with any chemical treatment. Copper will work, but may in turn kill your plants if they are copper sensitive. A bleach solution will also work well on this form of algae.

this is not it because it is stringy and looks like hairs on the plants, i can actually wipe my hand across the leaf and take off stringy type hairs;)

I have explained it several times. It is not a treatment in tank. It is a dip, 1:19 bleach:water solution. Works on many plants, however, frail plants should be avoided.
