Plant my Bichir tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think they do. Occasionally I will find torn leaves floating around but other than that my bichirs leave the plants alone. I really love the look (and benefits) of a planted tank. The polys seem to like resting on the leaves.

Do bichirs and plants Go well together? i don't see why not, but thought i would see if any of you have had any experience doing so?

I didn't have success when I tried plants with larger bichirs....They would flop and lounge on the plants breaking branches and uprooting them. If the plants are rooted onto driftwood or larger rocks it might work.

I keep trying to keep plants with mine but they always seem to find a way to uproot them. What i ended up doing is getting plants the attach to drift wood, then I got plants that dont need to be rooted and weaved some of the stems thru the drift wood to keep them from pulling it around.

It will work well when they are small but once they get larger the paths at they used when they were small wont be big enough so they will make it larger and larger until the plants have not grasp on anything.

Ive got my baby bichirs (3-4") in a tank with amazon swords and moss. They dont really disturb the moss because its attached to a big piece of wood but the swords have a diff story. When I planted the swords I made placed small pebbles under the substrate for the roots to grab on to. Some plants were uprooted and some got to grow roots and settle nicely. Those that grew enough stayed in place, while those that frequently got uprooted were never really planted. I dont know if my bichirs didnt like where I planted them or if the plants were just too weak to live with little monsters lol. IMO tho, plants go awesome with bichirs. They like to rest on the leaves or go inbetween them and is very interesting to watch. Gives it a natural feel especially when the little ones hang on the leaves, looks really natural. Like Dr B said, they do good with smaller bichirs. Havent tried with big ones yet but I'm guessing you'll end up with either flat or floating plants all over your tank.
