Plant my Bichir tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Imagine a 12 incher + poly cruising around your planted tank... not bad. but if it's a upper jaw variant, when it comes to girth, no you don't want any plants, they'll uproot em, go for floating plants, that's what you can only do. Actually may it be lower or upper variant they'll uproot it if the plants are not established well.

For those who say it can't be done, sorry, but you're very very wrong. Planted tanks are very easy to do with large bichirs, you just have to plan a bit and select proper plants and make sure they have what they need to grow. The below picture has two ornates in it (one in the background) one is 17", the other is 18".
The other advantage to planted tanks with bichirs, is that you will always see your bichirs. All of mine are extremely active, and are constantly swimming around and through the plants.

sometimes there are those exceptions, but IMO not all polys do that well with plants (at least not with me lol) but i guess if the plants are established and have good roots it'll work. IME though it just didn't work out with me. Others may have other experiences (like James). BTW nice ornate and planted setup you got there James :)
