Plant noob .. looking for beginner help!

Hi there Acura_RSX,
the advice you`ve received so far from Raul 7 & Dudey is spot on in my experience. All the plants they have kindly recommended to you I have at present growing in my low light, low tech snakehead tanks with no problems.
If you would like to look at some (in my opinion)great snakehead tanks, check out the sticky in the 'Snakeheads media lounge' titled 'share your channa set ups here'. Tropheus and Brucki`s tanks (on pages 1&2) are how S/Head tanks should be 'scaped'. This again is my opinion, but if you want to make your s/h`s feel comfortable or you want to breed them, well this type of tank is advised.
I would recommend s/h`s to you, especially some of the smaller species i.e.
Channa bleheri or rainbow s/h.
Channa gachua or dwarf s/h (many different types India, Sri lanka, Thai etc)
Channa orientalis or Ceylon s/h.
All of the above have been bred in aquariums. Out of the three though, C gachua are the easiest to breed.
If you do decide on keeping s/h`s, I would advise on some floating plants such as Pistia stratoides or water lettuce
Salvinia natans or water fern
Limnobium laevigatum or amazon frog bit etc.
Please bare in mind that the majority of s/h`s from mainland Asia are sub tropical, which means they don`t need to be kept at 26c all year round!! Winter temperatures of 17~18 degrees C are required to keep these fish in tip top condition.
For more info on s/h`s, have a look at MFK`s s/h forum or SnakeheadsUK.com. The picture gallery has photo`s of nearly all the s/h species known to date.
Good luck to you matey!!

Sorry about that! Went off on one there!!
Just out of interest, how big is your tank?
Also, why do you need to order plants? Aren`t there any local fish shops you could get plants from?

It sounds as though you are on the right track. Those plant recommendations that other people offered are good ones and among my favorites.

Really great sources for plans are your fellow hobbyists and online forums are good places to find material. The Planted Tank is one of my favorites for plants. It is quite active and I believe that there are quite a few Canadian members.

With those low tech plants and a good deal of fish biomass you can expect you plants to get most of the nutrients that they need from fish waste. However, I have often found iron to be limiting in such setups. You can use Seachem Iron or similar products to dose iron. Seachem Excel is another good one for adding some carbon for use by plants and it also has an algae suppression effect if dosed daily.
