Plant Pearling, or lack there of?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Phospates are at 2ppms last time I checked. I'm sure they are down some now, from the wc using RO water. I try to maintain 4ppm nitrate, which ends up dosing every other day. Not sure what you mean by method.

Method: do you use the EI method, Walstad setup, what's your fert / wc schedule?

4ppm nitrate seems pretty low.
In my tank, with a P of 2ppm, I keep a nitrate of 30-40ppm.
I don't see why you couldn't bump nitrate to a bit more, say 15-20.

I fert potassium nitrate three times a week, with supplement to keep nitrates where I have them, and CSM+B on the other days, except sunday. Sunday 50% WC.

I would keep my nitrates higher, but it takes too much ferts to do that. 10 is really high for my tank, plants suck it up way too fast.

So I just checked my nitrate today, and I may have found part of the problem. My nitrates were bottomed out at 0.0 ppm. I added 2 1/2 tsps of potassium nitrate, which brough me up to 6-7 ppm nitrate. Hopefully this will start the pearling process.

Well my algae is pearling.... I have a few small bubbles but still nothing great. Very sparse bubbles.

HEY! THE ALGAE IS PEARLING GREAT NOW! At least my plants have also begun to pearl, I think it may be an imbalence in my ferts.

I have a 125 gal native tank, that is heavily planted

I have co2 inj whole 9 yds

my tank stays at around 69 deg f

I never see pearling, i think its because of the low water temp, colder water can hold more o2,

I mow the vals and cut back every 2 weeks or so, i do see some bubbles then, the vals leak air bubbs avter they have been cut for a few days

Pearling is caused by high oxygen saturation in the water, not by too much/lack of co2 or anything. Massive pearling is commonly exhibited after a water change, where the oxgen saturation of the new water is already high. CO2 is not the only factor in healthy plant growth, either. It's a all a combination - of CO2, lighting, ferts, etc. If your plants are healthy, though they may not be pearling, and your fish are healthy, and you don't have algae issues, you're there.

Wylfya are you using the EI Dosing, just wondering cause you said you only dose KNO3 and Micros, how about the KH2PO4 and the K2so4

For all the hobbyist who injected co2 on their tank, try the Drop Checker its more accurate than those test kits. (Kh and Ph)
