I have wanted to do a heavily planted tank for years and finally have started doing it. Shortly after starting this project, I discovered my love for tanganyikan fish and ALMOST put my plant plan on hold. In stead, I decided to just incorporate them together! I have put rocks all over for the fish to hide and what not, and plants throughout that work with their lifestyle.

The fish in this tank aren't all tanganyikan, there are some from kind of all over, I know it's not very orthodox, but it has been working very well for about a month now. I have been using RO water with a neutral ph, then with the added co2 from my homemade co2 machine (bottle of sugar water and yeast), it brings the ph to a comfortable 7.3-7.5. Everything is thriving so far, aside from a couple plants that I recently took out of my oscar tank and added to this one because my oscars are now old enough to rip them apart. I have used a mixture of small black gravel and black sand for substrate and included a few different kinds of drift wood for the plecos to incorporate into their diet.

The stock in this tank is as follows:
2 marble angels
3 rainbows (not sure which kind until their color comes in more fully)
1 young Black Calvus
1 young White Calvus
4 Julidochromis Marlieri
1 Callachromis
4 baby Brichardi
1 Farlawela Catfish
1 Bushynose Pleco
1 Clown Pleco
1 Albino Chocolate Pleco
3 corydorus
5 ottocinclus

I know some of them are very weird to put together and not often recommended, but until I have a problem, I am going to keep it going in the this direction.

My point in starting this thread is to get any pointers or suggestions from some of the experts. Especially when it comes to the plants, as I am new to the plants. If anyone has any thoughts for how to make it look better, i'll take those too!

One question I do have, one of the filters on this tanks is a Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel 200 and the bio wheel refuses to spin. There is no junk caught in it to stop it, the water is high enough to have the pressure, the media inside is clean, just won't spin. It is only a couple months old, any ideas?

Thanks! I built the stand that my other tank sits on, I'll post a thread about that one soon. If you like this stand, you'll love the other!

love your Julidochromis Marlieri They are so fun to watch, i have one in my planted african tank. Their movements are so unique!

They are awesome! Since I posted those pictures, my julidochromis have bred twice! I have babies all over the place! Most of them have been moved to my brother's house now in one of his tanks, he's more of a lover than I am, I would have let them stay and get eaten but he wanted tos ave them.

Thank you! I'm a big fan of the drift wood look I must say
