Planted American Cichlid Aquarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm setting up an American cichlid aquarium and was wondering what type of plants would work well with them. I'd like to have some Dwarf Grass, a couple Madagascar Lace Plants, and maybe Some Flame Moss attached to a large piece of Driftwood. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nah.........Maybe small cichlids like brichardi.........They colonize in shells and caves finely, and do not really dig up plants............But, the larger cichlids will dig up the plants eventually............It is better having a smaller tank to experiment with when it comes to growing plants..............

Your common pleco will probably tear up the plants as much as the cichlids. Anubis can hold up pretty well though..

Brichardi are African Cichlids and all they do is dig and breed. They are like the Convicts of the African world, except all Brichardi fry man the heard, so they spawn on top of spawn and all take care of the fry. And Brichardi are not shell dwellers either.

You really should do some research as to what can co-exist with plants. I am very curious myself. I am really thinking of getting a huge tank getting it all decked out in different types of plants and throw some Dwarf Cichlids in it. But again I havent done any research on them ether so have no idea if they would work.

As I stated before Pike cichlids. The only large cichlids that work in a planted tank. I know this from much experience.

Depending on species Anubis may work. Wedging plants in rocks is a good idea, but you M. lace is toast either way. If you can prevent digging with the rocks, several species may survive certain cichlids. Good luck. I have tried it before and had little success with most species of plants with larger cichlids. Floating species of plants will be your best bet with larger cichlids if you like the look.
