Planted peacock tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've got floating water lettuce from my pond growing now. All you see from the side is white roots in the water column. It looks great from the top. i need to mention I have a custom canopy w/VHO's that allow for enough room for the plants to grow. With the plants in one corner, my Front loves the shade they provide and a sub. peacock finds refuge there.

I have found the trick is to add the fish to the plants, not the plants to the fish. I have heavily planted (anubias nana and barteri, several types of val, saggitarius, A LOT of sunset hygro, couple of aponoghetons). I used to have some other more "delicate" plants, but they made short work of them.

I make sure they are all well anchored with roots or, if they are new, with weights. The alpha male is the only one that really moves around substrate, but if he starts uprooting plants, I removed EVERYTHING out of the tank for a thourough cleaning and redecorate. Keeps the turf on my terms, not his.

I haven't had much luck with plants in mbuna tanks. Although I have never tried the "add the fish to the plants" trick. Seems like I might have to try this out.

I had, and I mean had, a 120 with a lot of plants and full of africans. It worked fine while they were small. They are growing and getting more aggressive. I'm down to about three plants. They are low profile plants and well rooted. They haven't been able to pull them up yet, but they are trying.

Long story short, it didn't work for me.
