So I'm thinking about turning my 35 gallon (36lx12wx18h) into a planted tank. I'd like to have a few schools of tetras and maybe a small cat or two for fish. I haven't put to much thought into plants, but I'd like to have a nice variety in the end.

But I'd also like to have one 'large' fish as an eye catcher. Tetra's are pretty, but just not interesting enough for me. Do you guys have any suggestions for a fish that won't bother the tetras and plants but is still fairly big and interesting looking? (for a 35, I know it isn't much to work with)

P.S. I'm not a fan of angels or gouramis. So please don't suggest those lol.

I honestly don't trust myself to give them the care that they need. Plus they are a little too close to angels for my liking.
I know I'm picky. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Geos would be nice if you like cichlids at least for a little cause they'll grow out of that tank in about 4 to 6 months.

A pair of some type of rams or a pair of kribs or something. I have both in a community tank together with neons and other tetras.

Dwarf cichlids are great, but some SA species are sensitive to water quality like discus--apistogramma and rams come to mind. Laetacara are great and pretty hardy IME... also dicrossus are nice. I don't do African cichlids so can't help you there.
