planted tank substrate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Soil only feeds the plants for a few months after that the mulm is suppose to replenishes the soil. So if you use it in the a sump I think you would need to replace it often.

Bio balls in the sump create a place for life to exist and eat the very fine poo particles. I guess its a delicate balance to get plants to eat the Mulm and the biosphere to keep on kickin. maybe need a oscar to produce high amounts of waste cause i dont think the little fishies wil be able to keep up the pooing for the plants to live off of... =)

crystal red shrimp (red with white bars) and red cherry shrimp (solid red) are two different species.
You're sticking the names together so we don't know which you're talking about.

my bad lol crystal red shrimp totally thought i was saying it right lol

check this out:
http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/...-mineralized-soil-substrate-aaron-talbot.html

the problem i see with potting soil is that i contains fertilizers even if it is organic. top soil does not (or should not). crystal red shrimp aka CRS are sensitive due to selective inbreeding, so they need pristine water conditions, soft water, and an acidic pH to thrive.

I was going to post the same link in here !!! =)

Yeah man, you can add soil but to mineralize it ! It's gonna take you couple weeks :X But in the long run, you ain't gonna worry about algae bloom ! do not forget to top it with some fine sand so that the soil stays where it should stay =)

good luck !

ok so here is what i did:
i out an inch and a half of potting soil down then put the same amount of sand on top of it to hold down the soil i haven't tested the water yet but am about too. also to get get rid of any air pockets i put my finger in several places and let the air drain out and i will continue to do that so there will be no noxious gas build up (lol)

alright so far so good with the soil and sand still venting the sand for ammonia and nitrates. i have two cherry barbs in there my sen bichir is steadily growin and he will go into my 30 when he is big enough. i have three mini swords in there and some hornwort floating around and my bichir loves it up in the hornwort
