Planted Tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah, eco-complete makes a planted substrate that is black sand. Looks great, and is useful as well. Kind of expensive though.

If you are reffering to this here, it's buffered for a higher pH for african cichlids, thus not suitable for plants. Pool filter sand is generally accepted as option for planted tanks, and it's cheap. You can use marine sand as well, as long as it isn't buffered, and is just plain sand (in whatever color you choose).

CO2 is manditory for certain plant species. It's recommended for all though. There are many plants that will do fine w/o CO2 injection. They certainly wont grow as fast, as carbon is usually the limiting factor in a tank (rather than P, N, K, Fe, Ca, Mg, etc).

It's been debated on whether or not you should use carbon media for your filters. Most plant people dont use it, since it often can take out nutrients for the plants.

I personally don't use it, and see it as a waste of money (it's only good for a month anyway). [see earlier post]
I let my plants do the filtering, just like in nature.
