Those seem cool, i was under the impression magroves were salt water.... also how fast would these trees grow? cuz obviously i couldn't have a tree coming out of my basement (unless they're not actually trees and i'm just an idiot

No you're not an idiot. Most mangroves are salt water especially the ones you seem commonly available for purchase. There are however mangroves that will grow in brackish or fresh it's just a matter of finding them for sale. From what I've found they don grow particularly fast but you could always bonsai it

Maple tree? like the ones in my back yard? I'm sorry, i've never had real plants in my tanks before... to be honest the only reason i took this challenge was because i was forced into it, cuz it was either do that or throw the tank out...

ok, that sounds cool... that'd be great for my fish cuz it'd creat hiding places too, right? any particular substrates or requirements that they need?

I think the only reason maple tree was suggested was because that was what was used in the tank in the link they provided as well. That's only because maples are commonly used as bonsai trees.

As far as the mangroves go, I believe most are found in very nutrient rich envrionments so give them a very good substrate as well as good lighting and they should do ok. But this would again depend on the exact species you would be looking at. Either way good luck and be patient.
