hi all i would like some help with some plants for my 300 gallon sa/ca tank. so far i am trying to decided between PFS and quikrete all purpose sand. also i will have a large driftwood stump and a couple rock pile caves. i am toying with adding another branch to the tank and would like to get some plants.

i dont want to do any fancy plants that require co2 or special substrate.

so my stock consists of:

1- male green terror
1- male jack
1- female nic
1- pair firmouth
1- albino tiger oscar (if he/she does not work out either a female GT or a Festea)
6- giant danio (dither fish) perhaps a couple more of these guys
1- catfish or pleco

i am thinking about attaching some java fern to the drift wood and perhaps the rock pile, also i would like some amazon swords and some duck weed

lighting for the tank will be a standard 48 inch duel bulb florescent fixture with 6500k bulbs

what do you think of my current list? what would be some other plants to keep in this tank?

If you have a sand substrate your fairly limited. I have the same in my eartheater tank. I attach a number of different Anubia to the driftwood, they are tough, require no special conditions to thrive, produce beautiful green leaves which offer lots if shade.

i have a planted african tank and i just used plain ole' dirt and my swords did great and the fish love to hide in them. i tried duck weed but my fish wouldnt eat it so it covered everything so i took it out ( and that is a pain!) pets mart just got some new type of plants that come in a packet and not in the tubes they are grass like. could try that. plants are usually cheap to try out. i would warn against petcos plants as to they do label their plants as fully aquatic or semi aquatic. such as "gold ribbons" those are not fully aquatic plants and should not be completely submerged.

thanks for the info. i will look into the anubia plants. here is a pic of the tank

How tall is your tank? it looks pretty deep. Need lots more light if your going to grow anything
Just my opinion. I've got a 210 planted tank w almost 1000 watts and i wish i had more

^ If the OP is just growing Anubias, then 1000w lights is WAY over-kill, since they are very low light plants...

Heck, even in my 60G planted tank i'm only running duel 30W T8 bulbs... so i would say while light can be important to certain types of planted tanks, i would say Co2 is even more important than light depending on the types of plants you want to grow such as HC carpets...

Should also mention, high light and slow growing plants can also cause algae to grow on the plants as well as the tank since the plants don't use up all that much nutrients....

I thought he mentioned swords to.
So another factor could also include Using RO water and getting your KH's in range , along with lower phosfate ,for your plants to benifit over the algae

the tank water level is 26 inches.

so i have put some thoughts to it and i think i will go with the java fern, anubias, duck weed
