Some plants are very specific root feeders. Look at plants like swords, crypts, val, lotus/lilly.... while it is possible for them to feed some from the column its not how its preference is by design. Take plants like water sprite or wisteria or about any other stem based plant or plants like anubias or java fern or hornwart.. all Are highly preferred yo column feed. This is why even when using basic substrate like pool filter sand and doing estimative index dosing along with root tabs can grow anything with the right balance of light co2 and nutrients

Well yah, the prefer to take nutrients from their roots, but I said its not true that they don't take from the water column. Even swords will take a bit from the column.

And you can only more or less grow everything using root tabs and EI dosing (there are some plants that are a bit tricker to get going even with perfect EI dosing...certain R. macrandra variations are incredibly picky about how they are kept, to the point where I'm not sure if anyone can pinpoint certain things about their care). EI is really meant to be more of a guideline that is then tweaked for the individual tank once you know how to start experimenting and tweeking. For example, some people who dose EI can dose much less than the recomended because of the way their tank is, many in fact can dose less Nitrogen because their livestock supplies more than enough Nitrogen to render the dosing of it pointless. EI is really, at its core, more about the PPM in the water column at all times of NPK and trace.

And yah, pool filter sand you NEED root tabs. But some substrates that are pretty "basic" imho are designed to absorb nurtirents from the water column and make them more obtainable for the roots of the plants.

As far as anubias goes, if the rhizome is burried the plant will die. The rhizome is the part the leafs and roots come out from. It rots when put under substrate. Grows best if tied to a rock or placed just above the substrate.

Ive had no issues using pool filter sand ei dosing high light and vo2 growing macaranda. After a while didn't have to dose the substrate as I never vacuum the substrate.

I guess every tank is going to be different then.
I liquid dose for my water Sprite and hornwort .
But I have to use tabs for the rest of the plants, or they just go away. Don't turn brown; just disappear.
