is there any reason my idea with the plastic gutter wouldnt have similar results?
I'm going to add some filter floss as planting media since it is lightweight but will give the roots something to grab onto as well as helping to filter out and trap some of the detritus.

i did this with my AC20 that is on my 5.5g cube, first i tried bamboo and it worked great and so did some pothos. rather than turn the flow down i just filled back chamber up with fine gravel and it worked great.
